
Role purpose
Throughout the four-year Engineering Apprenticeship role and course, you will gain qualifications in Engineering – ultimately becoming a time-served Maintenance Engineer. You will gain knowledge during your academic studies, but also through working closely with the existing team of Engineers. In the first year, Apprentices will be based full-time at college with some days spent on site as needed. Holidays in the first year will be in line with the academic calendar. From year 2 onwards, we will support you to continue your studies through day release and mentoring with the existing team.

Key accountabilities
- To learn, understand and carry out the health and safety implications of each operation and be familiar with the safe system of work before undertaking any practical work.
- Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
- To be able to demonstrate these skills and processes as the training period progresses by
- working independently or with a team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increasing overall contribution to the department.
- To undertake and successfully complete suitable college courses throughout the training period, achieving the academic grades and practical skills in order to progress
- Learning and understanding the importance of Health and safety within the workspace and the university.
- To learn how to maintain workshop equipment and to keep it in good repair.
- To maintain a logbook over the duration of the apprenticeship period, recording projects that have been undertaken and the skills learned.
- To maintain and to ensure general good housekeeping of the workplace.
- Adhere to planned timetable of work to allow completion of the MA program as originally planned.
Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Three qualifications at National 4 level or above (or equivalent) including maths
- SVQ in Performing Engineering Operations Level 1 would be advantageous but is not essential
- Microsoft Office skills
- Examples of using effective communication and problem-solving skills
